A Day on Cape Cod with Maddie Day and a Giveaway

Welcome to a new series by Maddie Day (or Edith Maxwell as many of you know her). There's also a chance to win a copy of Murder on Cape Cod in a giveaway at the end of the interview, so be sure to enter.

Why is Cape Cod a good setting for your new series?
Cape Cod is a nationally known attraction in the Northeast with something for everyone. It’s a
popular destination for its beaches, natural seacoast beauty, lighthouses, and iconic shops. Couples flock there to get married. Photographers appreciate the unique light. Artists and writers find solitude and community to produce their work. Nature lovers explore the wide variety of birds, other wildlife, ponds, and shorelines. Families visit in the summer to get away from the city. There are many historic sites to visit, and the Mashpee Wampanoag Indians are also located on the Cape.

Tell me about your experience on the Cape.
Because I live on the New Hampshire border, as far north in Massachusetts as the Cape is south, I don’t venture down there in the summer. Instead I rent a Quaker retreat cottage in West Falmouth during the off season for solo

writing retreats. I walk on the Shining Sea bike trail or rent a bike and tool around. I watch the ospreys fish and generally soak up the delectable sights, sounds, and smells of a coastal town. I staged my fictional town of Westham somewhere near there.

Why a bike mechanic protagonist and how does that work with the setting?
I’m always looking for an unusual occupation for a cozy protagonist. Because the Cape is generally flat, lots of people bike, so I knew Mac Almeida would have repair customers year round, not just during tourist season. Being a local business owner makes her a regular in the book group, too.

How did you choose Cape Verde Island as the character’s ancestry?
I knew that a number of people with Cape Verdean ancestry live on the Cape year round, and I have some familiarity with the language (I speak Portuguese and it’s a partly Portuguese Creole). The echo of “Cape” matches, too, and I thought, why not?

Love the Book Club reading only cozies. How will they be involved in future books? Will they
ever meet Louise Penny?
Ooh – great question! I don’t know if Louise will vacation on the Cape, but she might, or maybe the Wicked Authors will go on retreat there and help solve a crime. The Cozy Capers will certainly be involved in every investigation.

What are your plans for the future of the series?
Book two, Murder at the Taffy Shop, is complete and submitted. It takes place during the height of the tourist season in August. Book three will take place in early fall but I’m not yet sure what’s going to happen. I hope to have contract renewal after that.

The book releases December 18 in a paperback exclusive from Barnes & Noble. It will rerelease a year later in all formats on all platforms. This is an experimental deal between B&N and Kensington and none of us is quite sure how it will fly. In the meantime, I’d love to give away a signed copy to one commenter here today.

Readers: Where’s your favorite waterside getaway? Do you ever rent bikes and ride along the shore? What about book groups? Love ‘em? Hate ‘em? Dish!

I love P-Town on the Cape. It's got great beaches and amazing quirky shops. So many great restaurants too. I love how it's got a great mellow feel too. Very laid back.

I live in Florida about 2 miles from the coast. My favorite beach so far is at Englewood, there are tons of shells. I am working on becoming a beach bum. There is a nice restaurant there where you can dine outdoors and on the weekends they have bands that play oldies so that I can sing along. lol Thank you for this chance. pgenest57(at)aol(dot)com

I have Mackinac Island on my bucket list! I love the seashore and the beauty and slower pace of Mackinac is something that I have wanted to do for a long while.
I am so excited about this series! Having a bike shop sounds fun, especially in a tourist town. You could meet so many people and hear some many stories!
Thank you for giving away a copy of this book.

We live smack dab in the middle of the U.S. so no major water around us. Do love going to the rivers and lakes for excursions and to do some photography. I will have to say I love the coastline of Maine. We went there for a bucket list trip 2 years ago and LOVED it. I would go back in a heartbeat. We literally drove the entire coast line seeing all the lighthouses, beaches and towns along the way. Although I use to ride a bike quite frequently, now with medical problems and seemingly so accident prone, I feel a lot better walking. When that gets too difficult we drive - slow because I don't want to miss anything. :)

Loved the interview with Edith aka Maddie and learning more about the workings of her newest book. Can't wait for the opportunity to read "Murder on Cape Cod". Thank you ever so much for the chance to win a copy! And now I know to start looking forward "Murder at the Taffy Shop" and adding it to my TBR list. She is an amazing author whose books I greatly enjoy!

I have an old friend who lives on Marhta's Vineyard year 'round, and I believe the tourists/seasonal residents/residents situation is probably about the same. Makes for some interesting times.
I wish you the best of luck with this series, Edith!

I grew up in Northeast CT. and my family took multiple vacations and many day trips to Cape Cod all my life. My husband and I had a three season place in Wellfleet for about 12 years and then we lived in Buzzards Bay for another ten or so years as well as towns very close to the Cape too. So the Cape is a favorite place with many fabulous memories for sure. During our time on the Cape and living near by we got to know many people who are Cape Verdian and got to know many Portuguese people over the years with many still good friends all these years later. So any book set on the Cape that where we lived is a book we know we will love. I still do a yearly trip to the Cape with my grown daughter as a little get away each year and it's amazing to get in some trips down Memory Lane. I just found a picture of my Mom, sister and me taken in Provincetown in the 1960's and it brought back so many memories.
At the Cape we did a lot of fishing, mostly at the ocean beaches and then we'd have a great meal of striped bass cooked over charcoal. Great memories.
I did a lot of sketching while sitting in Marsh areas of Wellfleet to sketch birds and it was so relaxing. We never did biking but we did a lot of walking and exploring the back roads of Cape Cod which I will never forget!!! I'd love to win a book personally autographed by Maddie/Edith. Thank you.

We have a couple of choices that we love to visit. But. The upper Siletz is basically our fave, since we can camp there. Tube rafting. Steelhead for dinner. Crawdads for lunch.

We’ve been to Emerald Island, N Carolina and we loved the beach. We took our granddaughter and friend to Myrtle Beach and that was way too busy but they loved it. I’ve always wanted to go to Cape Cod it’s on my list.

I grew up near Lake Michigan, so I guess I always took the water for granted. These days I’m half a mile from a reservoir! But I’ll always remember fishing for flounder off the dock in Moosehead Bay, Maine.

I love to go to Mackinac Island. No cars are allowed. So you walk, bike or use horses to get around. So peaceful there.

When I was growing up we would spend three weeks in the Cape. We camped in North Truro. The beaches there on the oceanside were my favorite. Honestly anywhere that there is water is my favorite getaway. Thank you for the chance.

Funny thing, I love reading about characters that are near the water, but not a fan. I would rather be in the mountains by a stream. Thanks for the chance to win.

I love being on the coast. Not sure if I can ride. Chemo somehow messed up my balance although, I seem to do better most days. Walking out there would do wonders for me!
The gulf coast side of Florida had been a favorite for me.
