The House on Candlewick Lane

When Greer Dobbins receives a phone call from her daughter's school, it leads her on a search across the ocean. In The House of Candlewick Lane by Amy M. Reade, Dr. Dobbins hears the terrifying news that her daughter is not in her school.

Sure that her daughter was on the school bus, Greer cannot imagine what has happened to Ellie between the time she entered the bus and the arrival at the school. While reviewing video tapes with the police at the school, they see Ellie arriving at the building, but walking towards a car. The shocking realization that the car belongs to her ex-husband sends Dr. Dobbins reeling.

Greer discovers her daughter's passport is missing and she fears her ex-husband Neill has taken her back to Scotland. This leads her on a frantic chase to Edinburgh in the hopes of encountering them as they pass through customs/immigration.

To Greer's shock, Neill and Ellie do not appear at customs/immigration in Edinburgh and she fears for her daughter. With Neill's gambling addiction Greer is unsure who is after him
and how much money is involved. She enlists the assistance of the Edinburgh police, but decides to investigate on her own.

One of her first stops is the home of her former in-laws Alistair and Janet Gramercy. Greer knows she will not get much cooperation from them because of a terrifying experience with them when she first met them. Naturally their opinion has not changed and they refuse to answer any questions. In fact they threaten her and tell her not to bother them again and to stop harassing Neill.

Greer continues her search for her daughter and it leads her into art fraud, money lenders and murder.

This is a frightening story for any parent to read - kidnapping of a child by the non-custodial parent.
